CURIUM is employed to manage a historical legacy of waste that has been stored for over 20 years at a bankrupt chemical production base in North Macedonia. A Macedonian company responsible for the disposal and removal of chemicals from OHIS's production base and factory in Skopje commissioned CURIUM to extract 14 tons of vinyl chloride monomer from an old oil tank truck and transfer it to ADR approved packaging.
Vinyl chloride monomer is toxic and highly flammable, appearing in a gaseous state at room temperature and pressure. It is stored in a tanker truck that cannot be moved anymore due to severe corrosion. CURIUM is responsible for transferring VCM from old tank trucks to tank trucks that comply with ADR standards, and then transporting them to disposal facilities in Germany.
The transfer of vinyl chloride monomer is carried out in three stages: first, liquid phase transfer, then gas phase transfer, and finally, the old tank truck is completely inerted with nitrogen to eliminate all residues. This assignment has undergone a hazard study beforehand, and due to its proximity to residential areas (located in the Skopje residential area), specific protection and prevention measures need to be taken. In addition, continuous monitoring of the atmosphere was carried out and any leaks were detected in a timely manner. During the transfer process, no harmful gases were released into the environment. After the homework was completed, the manhole of the old tank truck was opened. The Macedonian company is responsible for the scrapping and recycling of tank trucks.
