CURIUM formed a consortium with Suez, France in 2016 and won the bid to complete the packaging and transportation project of solidified gasoline waste from the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Albania, which was tendered by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe at the end of 2015.

This batch of gasoline waste belongs to the military industrial plant of Albania's former regime. The abandoned site, which has been abandoned for more than 40 years, still contains chemicals for producing bombs and military ammunition. The original packaging has gradually been corroded and damaged, and the materials inside the packaging are scattered on the ground, causing certain environmental risks. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe conducted a situation assessment before the project and found a total of 37 different hazardous substances on the site, with chloramine and xylene being the most dangerous. Moreover, due to the fact that the venue is only 2 to 5 kilometers away from urban residential areas, although there are some armed personnel on duty, children and teenagers may still occasionally enter the venue to play. The environmental and human health risks associated with the venue urgently need to be eliminated.

CURIUM, as the leading party of the consortium, is responsible for packaging, supervising storage, and disposal/reuse of gasoline waste. After conducting research on the site, CURIUM developed operational plans and safety regulations based on different products and their distribution. The cooperating method is Suez, which is responsible for the transportation and final disposal of waste to France.

After the successful completion of the project, due to the special historical background of the site, the Albanian Ministry of Defense held a small waste departure ceremony and the Minister of Defense delivered a speech.

In Europe, CURIUM has completed numerous management or technical support projects for environmental cleaning and restoration of retired industrial sites.
