Lambiotte Company was founded in 1886 and was once a major producer of charcoal in Europe. The company's business soon expanded from mainly producing charcoal to distilling liquids from carbonized charcoal and producing related chemicals. The company once made its city Pr é mery the capital of wood chemistry. However, due to a strategic error by the company in minimizing waste management, the city of Premery has become one of the most polluted areas in France. The chemicals produced by Lambiotte include acetic acid, formic acid, sodium acetate, solvents, tanning products, and food seasoning agents.

Due to competition from petrochemicals, the company ultimately declared bankruptcy and announced judicial liquidation on October 23, 2002. The owner of the site did not have the ability to dispose of the waste on the site or carry out site restoration, and the factory eventually became an unowned site, which was taken over by the French Environmental and Energy Agency for demolition and restoration.

The project has been broken down into several different parts, CURIUM is mainly responsible for the clearance of industrial hazardous waste left on the site. Most hazardous waste is stored in storage tanks or distillation towers. CURIUM also assisted the client in writing a tender for the demolition of production buildings and facilities, and assisted the client in selecting a suitable construction party. The challenge of this demolition project lies in the presence of asbestos in all buildings and most equipment (such as distillation towers), as well as toxic gases such as benzene and other carcinogenic aromatic solvents present on site. 40% of the hazardous waste left on site and generated during the demolition process must be transported by railway. CURIUM also supervised the construction process and reviewed the safety and compliance of the construction party's operating procedures. Ensuring safety and compliance throughout the entire project construction period.

In Europe, CURIUM has completed numerous management or technical support projects for environmental cleaning and restoration of retired industrial sites.
