A chemical factory (oil and gas) with a 150 year industrial history in France is undergoing repairs under the leadership of Golden Company. Due to the cross contamination of chemistry and fireworks, the site requires complex risk management. When a vehicle of contaminated soil at the site was transported to a disposal facility, a radioactive alarm was triggered, confirming the presence of natural radioactive substances in the soil and exceeding the radioactive limit. CURIUM and a consulting firm were commissioned by Gloder to develop a management plan for 1350 cubic meters of soil containing enhanced natural radioactive contamination, of which 350 cubic meters were excavated and temporarily stored on the factory site.

The owner entrusts CURIUM and a collaborative consulting company to conduct research that includes the following content :

• Data input and management plan;

• Quantitative assessment of radiation exposure of excavated soil left on site;

• Quantitative assessment of radiation exposure to unexcavated soil

• ADR transportation preparation research.

In addition, the client needs administrative support from the Nuclear Safety Administration for declaration.

In order to support a management strategy based on quantitative assessment of radiation exposure and future site use, CURIUM conducted chemical and radiological analyses on samples taken on-site in its internal laboratory, and merged input data. These analyses are also used to identify disposal agencies with appropriate acceptance thresholds and assist in determining ADR transportation strategies. CURIUM's analysis also provides a basis for defining thresholds for the site: to determine which soil needs to be excavated for on-site storage, as well as the management of vegetation and pipelines on the site.

CURIUM provides a professional and fast solution for Gold's unexpected incidents of exceeding the radioactive threshold during site restoration, ensuring that it does not need to interrupt site restoration work and adheres to the schedule. This solution complies with environmental and health regulations while also taking into account the future use plan of the site, optimizing management costs as much as possible for Golden and the owner.
