The SNCPA company, located in Caselin, Tunisia, which produces alpha pulp, ceased production in 1990. It uses the mercury electrolysis method to produce its basic products as raw materials. After being abandoned for 20 years, the production facility continued to age until the roof of the electrolysis plant containing asbestos collapsed. In addition, due to the high degree of degradation of building and equipment structures, intervention measures must be taken near the operating hydrogen tank (gas measuring instrument) and highly preventive measures must be taken.

The safety demolition process was carried out in collaboration with a local company, SEGOR. CURIUM's tasks include:

Preliminary research: Diagnosis of pollution distribution of mercury, asbestos, and lead, and development of demolition methods;

Protective measures for installing gas measuring instruments in operation and temporary supports for the electrolysis workshop;

Empty the mercury inside the decomposer, pipelines, and containers, and prepare a cleaning area for contaminated components;

Dismantling of process equipment and superstructure supporting the electrolysis room, dismantling of 10 electrolysis tanks, cutting of electrolysis tanks, cleaning of large drums and waste metals to remove pollution, and construction management of building demolition.

At the end of the project, approximately 2500 square meters of industrial building equipment were demolished; Collect 25 liters of liquid mercury and transfer it to an ADR tank; We collected and packaged 225 cubic meters of mercury contaminated waste and 25 cubic meters of fiber cement. Three buildings were demolished and a temporary storage warehouse was built.
