Dismantling/Remediation

Neutralization before dismantling military facilities containing hydrazine and nitric acid

There is a historic facility on a military base in Crete that contains hydrazine and nitric acid. In order to safely dismantle the facility, the military client wishes to diagnose and decontaminate the facility. When carrying out these tasks, consideration must be given to the risks of toxicity, flammability, corrosiveness, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and reproductive toxicity associated with the products present on site. This project was carried out in collaboration with ENVIROCHEM.

CURIUM has conducted preliminary research, including risk analysis and operational procedures, to determine the optimal neutralization solution. Then, appropriate solutions were used on site to neutralize the remaining hydrazine and nitric acid wastewater in the device. These solutions were previously tested in the CURIUM laboratory.

Finally, the neutralization and flushing wastewater is pumped into appropriate packaging and sent to the corresponding disposal center for disposal.
